Bright

"Bright" is the song that began the Lemonboy project. Written during a time of deep reflection, it draws from my experience growing up gay in Catholic school—where values of unconditional love and kindness I internalized often clashed with the judgment that I faced as a queer person. This song is a gentle call to action, rejecting rigid doctrines that wound rather than heal, and embracing kindness as the most tangible way to be a good person.

At its core, "Bright" is a deeply personal exploration of my unwavering belief in the power of caring for one another. It reflects the fear and uncertainty I feel as a queer person living in a world that can feel increasingly hostile, yet it also celebrates the joy and strength found in my community. The song is a reminder that, even in the face of adversity, we can choose to carry kindness forward and work toward a brighter future.

The lyrics, tender but resolute, express my hope for a world where love and understanding can outshine discrimination, predudice, and judgment. To me, "Bright" is not just a song—it’s a promise to myself and others to keep striving for a world that is gentler, a world that is kinder, a world that is more compassionate. It is a reminder to myself to do everything within my power to make tomorrow brighter than today, for both myself and those around me.

Bright

I don’t want to be a survivor

I’m not proud of my resilience

I think some people would be kinder

If they cared less for their own brilliance

‘Cause there’s no reason to spend a life

Hurting hopeful humans who don’t want holy advice

It’s hard as it is just being alive

So if there’s one thing I can make the world before I die

Darlin’, I hope that I make it bright

So hung up on a hairpin

The scribes and the hypocrites

But if pride is such a deadly sin

Why are the greedy passing judgment

It makes no sense to me to spend one’s life

Making waking up feel hard for people aching to get by

Perhaps it’s naive, perhaps it’s contrived

But if I ever get the money, I’ve already got the time

To make the world a little more bright

I’ve never cured my solace

By cementing someone’s pain

Or quoting mistranslations

From the name they use in vain

As a person, just a person

Not a problem, I’ve got love to give

As a person, just a person

Not a problem, I just wanna live

And if there’s a world where loving people’s a crime

That’s fucked up and I think that’s a fatal flaw in the design

Tomorrow, I hope it’s in your heart to change your mind

This road has bumps but, to me, it’s worth the drive

‘Cause if there’s one thing that I aim to make this world before I die

Darlin’, I hope that I make it bright

I hope I make it bright

Bright
